Description of Orchestral Scores

While some soundtrack artists draw on the versatility of synthesizers or the intimate power of a small band, many composers prefer the subtle gradations of mood created by an entire orchestra. These composers write out parts for large ensembles of strings, woodwinds, percussion and brass, guiding the feel of a movie with grandiose sweeps and subtle emotive passages. In turn, many of these scores become part of the repertoire for popular orchestras-John Williams' score for Star Wars and Jerry Goldsmith's for Chinatown are performed worldwide."
