Why do downloads on my Android stop when the screen turns off?

If you want to download tracks to your phone over wifi, you will need to set a setting on your phone to enforce staying on wifi when the screen goes to sleep.

Settings -> Wireless & networks -> Wi-Fi settings -> Hit the hardware menu button -> Select Advanced -> Select Wi-Fi sleep policy

There will be three options:

- When screen turns off

- Never when plugged in

- Never

You should choose the option best suited for your needs. If you plan on always downloading while your phone is charging, you should use "Never when plugged in", which will never sleep the WiFi connection while plugged in and charging.  If you are not going to be charging during download, you should select "Never", so the WiFi connection will stay active, even while off of a charger.

If you choose "When screen turns off" the WiFi connection will drop when the screen goes off, and you will revert to your cellular network (EDGE, 3G, 4G) not wifi, to download the songs, which in most cases will be slower than WiFi and could be an issue if you have a capped data plan.

KNOWN EXCEPTIONS:

There are two phones that we are aware of that do not adhere to the setting listed above.

HTC EVO

HTC Incredible

If you set the setting to "Never" and the Evo/Incredible goes to sleep, it will still cut the Wi-Fi connection and will NOT start using 3G.  Your phone will have no connection at all.  For these phones, if you want to be connected to Wi-Fi and download, you will have two options:

- Keep your phone in charging mode when you are downloading.

- Install a third party app that will force the screen to remain awake while Rhapsody is running.  KeepScreen is an example of software that will work.  This will force the screen to remain on when Rhapsody is open.  This will drain your battery faster though, as the screen will constantly be on, until you disable the third party app.
