Unexpected Butchies Twist #1: Singer Kaia Wilson has a very girly voice. Besides its high pitch, it's as sugary and poppy as a bowlful of Disney princess. Not exactly what you'd expect from a queercore band whose name implies masculinity. Then again, that analysis is propped up by a tired gender paradigm, and the Butchies are well-practiced at messing with gender. Unexpected Twist #2: The band's first album since the dissolution of Wilson's Mr. Lady label finds them sounding more polished and put-together than ever before. Like Wilson's startling voice, it suits them.
