The Futureheads

The Futureheads' second album swarms with so many musical ideas that it threatens to crumple under its own guitar-centric buzz. That's not to say News and Tributes isn't focused -- a tightly-wound sonic pressure keeps its post-punk fresh and punchy. The inventiveness the band shows for filigree -- a frisky tambourine here, a glowing harmony there, idiosyncratic songwriting throughout -- is consistently surprising. Working with a well-worn blueprint, the Futureheads make music that feels proudly durable.
