The Psychedelic Furs

The Psychedelic Furs raised the bar with the release of Forever Now; on their next release, Mirror Moves, they up the ante even more. Songs such as "Heaven" and the gorgeous "The Ghost In You" prove they could be accessible and still retain most of their arty ways. Though not as angular as earlier releases, Mirror Moves shows they wear gloss well.

Big drums, big sounds – yeah, but where's the groove? That seems to be the problem with
this fourth record from the Psychedelic Furs, the neohippie, punk-era, have-it-your-way
band of Brits. Vocalist Richard Butler continues to sport the odd Bowie touch to
complement his lugubrious version of a Johnny Rotten sneer, and the backing still swirls

Tired of the sardonic fake Pistolese, Richard Butler turns his heartfelt dispassion to an approach that bears the same relation to Bowieism as the earlier Furs did to punk. His seducerama is in the manner of an aging matinee idol who isn't quite as famous as he thinks he is; he sings as if he's known you for years even though you're both perfectly aware that so far your relationship goes no further than his offer of a lift back to your place. And if you're feeling detached enough yourself, you just may take him up on it. (Grade - B+)
