Rhapsody

Paying for the Summer of Love is a 1990 collection of demos that predated the 1979 debut album Shades in Bed by England's the Records. Fans of the band's sugary power pop might delight in this collection, as the production isn't as overdone as on the rest of their discography. Even songs like the bubbly "Teenarama" and hook-laden "Starry Eyes" sound just rough enough around the edges to be more palatable than the Records' later music (which swaps out vintage guitar tones for sharper, colder ones). The catchy, kitschy, bonus cut of a Coca-Cola jingle is totally rad.
