The Warlocks

The Warlocks' fifth album finds the droning, neo-psych sextet keeping its approach calm and concise. After a decade of fuzzed-out rock jams, the band nods more to the laid-back shoegaze greats than to the drone rock gods, as ethereal vocals weave into ringing distortions ("The Midnight Sun") and repetitive melodies ("Slowly Disappearing"). The songs here are shorter (none over six minutes), softer and simpler than those on previous albums, but the overall compositions are as pretty as ever ("There Is a Formula to Your Despair," "You Make Me Wait").
