Tommy Womack used to play with Roots rock stalwarts the Bis-quits, as well as Post-Punk rockers Government Cheese. His solo work is drenched in the same kind of old-timey Americana that slapped a beard on Gene Clark. Womack inserts crafty wit into his songs' biting lyrics in a sardonic and surreal manner similar to a young Bob Dylan; many of his more pastoral songs are hypnotizing narratives that draw you in like a magnet. He also gets his feet wet in moody, stripped-down folk songs as well as hyped-up, foot-stomping Blues Rock numbers. Drawing out vowels, crooning romantically into his chords and picking as if there were nobody listening, Womack's gritty singing is as characteristic as Hank Williams' hound-dog howls or Jeff Tweedy's scratchy inflections.
