Description of A Cappella

A Cappella means vocals without accompaniment. Popular A Cappella refers more specifically to the small vocal groups of American popular music. A Cappella began as a pop style in the early 1960s with the release of a few Nutmegs singles on Times Square Records. The style took off and enjoyed some success, but it never quite captivated mass audiences. However, appreciation of A Cappella pop has continued steadily with modern artists such as the Bobs, the Nylons and Bobby McFerrin, occasionally charting with originals and covers.
