Young Waylon Jennings recorded demos and singles for numerous labels. As a result, this stuff has been endlessly repackaged by even more labels. Early Years shares a lot of cuts with both #1 Nashville Outlaw and Phase One: The Early Years 1958-1964 (the most definitive representation of this era). Nevertheless, this retrospective shows Jennings searching for his sound. Often singing beyond his natural range, he goes full-blown countrypolitan on the syrupy "Burnin' Memories," then turns right around and blows our minds with "Sally Was a Good Old Girl," a nasty chunk of rock 'n' roll.
